This photo shoot takes us to the shores of Sumida River, which runs along the eastern side of central Tokyo and empties in the Tokyo Bay. Arriving late in the evening after all the commuters had mostly returned home allowed me to have most of the shorelines to myself to slow down and focus on compositions and exposure times, and to experiment with different focal lengths as well different ND filters.

Although I wouldn't call any of the following photos excellent, outstanding, or unique, I do hope that they are able to convey the emotions I felt of enjoying the calm, slowly rolling river with a variety of backdrops that reflect both the old and new--a phenomenon that is highly relevant to Tokyo.

The first two shots were taken at this location:
Bridges and High-Rise Apartments

Long-exposure shot of three different bridges crossing Sumida River, and high-rise apartments located near the river in Chuo Ward, Tokyo.

Tokyo Nightscape and Reflections

Bridge, Etai Bridge, and high-rise apartments reflecting on the calm waters of Sumida River in the southern end of Tokyo near Tokyo Bay.

The next two shots were taken at this location:
Solid Ribbed Arch Bridge over River

Long-exposure shot of a Etai Bridge as it crosses over Sumida River connecting Koto Ward (on the left) with Chuo Ward (on the right) on the waterfront district in Tokyo.

Wide-Angle Shot of Urban River Shoreline

Wide-angle long-exposure shot of Etai Bridge looking towards Chuo Ward from the Koto Ward side of the Sumida River in Tokyo showing office buildings (right) and high-rise condos (left).

The following five shots were taken at this location:
Low-Profile Suspension Bridge over River

The Kiyosu Bridge is one of my favorite bridges crossing over Sumida River in Tokyo. Built after the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake (magnitude of 7.9, killing approx. 140,000 people). The bridge was modeled after the Köln-Deutz Bridge in Germany and became Japan’s first self-anchored chain suspension bridge. This bridge is said to have a more graceful, beautiful, feminine form.

Lights on Self-Anchored Suspension Bridge over River

Lights of the Kiyosu Bridge light up not only the superstructure (everything above the deck), but also light up the substructure (everything below the deck). Although it makes for nice nightscape photography, I assume it is more of a safety feature   since cruise boats and water taxis navigate the river way after sunset. The lamps on the towers reflect the aesthetics of the designers who built the bridge over 70 years ago.

Rivets, Steel, and Light

Lights on the main cables of the Kiyosu Bridge are mounted out of sight under the cables and shine downwards reflecting the bridge’s blue paint giving the illusion that the main cables arching across the bridge are luminescent, which is in nice contrast with the shadows cast by the rivets on the support towers.

Arachnid Legs of Steel

Connecting Chuo Ward with Koto Ward in Tokyo, this cropped shot of Kiyosu Bridge creates a darker mood that looks more menacing than the previous wider angle version that lets more light into the camera.

Tallest Structure in Japan

Tokyo Skytree, located about 3.6 km (2.2 mi) from where this shot was taken, is the tallest structure in Japan standing at 634 meters (2,080 ft) and serves as a broadcast and observation tower.

The following shot was taken at this location:
Nighttime Traffic on Bridge

A long-exposure shot as traffic crosses over the bridge to and from Koto Ward and Chuo Ward creating light trails across the bridge.
